'Let me live, love and say it well in good sentences'

Versatility and style in abundance – Kodaline’s debut EP of psychedelic soft-rock gems

Kodaline are a four-piece psychedelic soft-rock band from Dublin, consisting of members Stephen Garrigan, Mark Prendergast, Vinny May Jr and Jason Boland. The band released their self-titled and hotly-tipped debut EP this week and like Mo Farah’s 18th lap; the excitement is building and onlookers are predicting a big and memorable finish to their first week of sales.

So far, ‘All I Want’ is the track that has been receiving the most attention and airplay and a glance at the accompanying music video is sure to explain why. Directed by Stevie Russell for TIDAL productions, with Russell also playing the lead role, the video is an emotional fly-on-the-wall tale of a man just trying to live a normal life, alongside coping with the most unusual of personal circumstances. The video is beautiful in both its message and its manifestation, my favourite part being the unconditional love of Russell’s dog for his owner, whilst the humans around him simply choose to judge. Being a lover of all God’s furry creatures, this struck a particularly poignant chord with me.

The EP features the following tracks: ‘All I Want’, ‘Lose Your Mind’, ‘Pray’ and ‘Perfect World’, each displaying an element of vulnerability and an emotionally retrospective approach to the band’s songwriting. Kodaline play The Sugar Club in Dublin on October 4th, 2012 but are yet to announce any tour dates for the UK and beyond. I am sure that it will only be a matter of time, however.

Kodaline have versatility and style in abundance and I think that their sound airs more than a little on the side of folk, as opposed to straight rock; never a bad thing in my opinion and the only proof that I need that this band is going to go far in 2013.
